Hooked on Fishing: Big Mistake
By Dick Peach

I am an avid reader and viewer of almost anything fishing. I watch fishing shows about salt water fishing, fresh water fishing, fishing tournaments and even vacation shows if there is going to be something about fishing in them. I probably subscribe to half a dozen fishing magazines and I have a collection of books on all facets of fishing and fishing lures.

I tell you all of this because I think I’m pretty much aware of new, breaking innovations in fishing, so it was with great surprise and anger that I caught a number of nice bass this past weekend with a bait that I heard about a couple of years ago and never tried. Big mistake on my part, and one I hope I don’t make again. What I’m talking about is a very simple bait that is just a killer bait as the water is getting colder. I’m talking about a Ned Rig.

The Ned Rig has been around for a couple of years, but really hit the fishing world in a big way this past year as several major tournaments were won using the Ned Rig. The Ned Rig is a light weight mushroom head jig (1/16 to 1/8 oz.) and a small 2 ¾  inch plastic worm from Z-Man.

The worm is threaded on the jig so it is straight, with the hook exposed. The type of worm is important; the Z-Man Finesse TRD is made for this rig. The worm is made from a special polymer that stretches very easily and won’t break, but most importantly the worm floats, so when it lands on the bottom the worm will stand straight up like a stick.

Then comes the hard part of fishing this bait, you do nothing. That’s right – just let it sit there and for some reason the bass just can’t leave it alone. If you don’t get a hit after a couple of minutes, lift and let it drop down to the bottom again. It is that simple and it works.

Give this simple set-up a try, I think it will become your go to finesse rig.

Until next time…keep a tight line.
