Hooked on Fishing: Fishing Between Fronts

Everyone got tired of waiting for the weather to get better and stay that way, so they started fishing between the fronts.

On the good days, the fishing was good to great depending on where you were fishing.

On the Fox Chain, the bluegills have been in close to breakwalls and bridge pilings. The crappies are in the middle of their spawn in the shallow weeds, and just dropping a bait into the weed pockets has been producing some nice-size male crappies.

Lake Geneva has been good for bluegills, rock bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, all are active and feeding. Boat traffic is also picking up, so be careful.

The Skokie Lagoons have also been reporting some good catches of largemouth bass. The most effective bait seemed to be a Ned rig in a dark color.

The Mississippi River is still pretty high, with most launch ramps several feet under water, making launching an adventure in waders.

Fish are biting, especially the walleye, using  a ramp out of the current will make launching less hazardous.

The State High School Bass Fishing Tournament is over. Congratulations to Highland High School from deep southern Illinois. For the two-day tournament, the young anglers boated more than 21 pounds  of bass, including the big bass of the tournament at 5 pounds, 13 ounces.

Of the teams in this area, Buffalo Grove finished 18th out of the 57 teams and Notre Dame High School finished 40th. Congratulations to all the anglers on competing for the two days.

Next weekend, our very own fishing pond opens for the season up at Lovelace Park. Those looking to get young kids started fishing will find this is the best way to go about it. The City of Evanston will supply the rod and reel, the bait and the help needed for young anglers to have good day fishing.

No excuses – let’s get out there and fish.

Until next time … keep a tight line.
