Latina Leadership at Dewey School
In April, Erika Martinez was nominated and unanimously elected to join Dewey School’s PTA leadership team as a co-president for 2015-2017. Originally from Mexico City, Ms. Martinez and her husband moved to Evanston because they learned it was a great place to raise a family. Her eldest daughter started kindergarten at Dewey in 2010. Since then, Ms. Martinez has been actively involved in District 65’s Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee, Dewey’s Two Way Immersion (TWI) classrooms and Ambassadors of Reading program. “I now have three children attending Dewey school. Parent involvement is very important for helping our children to be successful in school. Working with teachers, parents and students has helped me to learn more about my children’s educational experience,”
Ms. Martinez says.

Ms. Martinez first became active at Dewey as a member of the translation committee. Through this group, she began to encourage more Latino families to join her in participating at different events and meetings at Dewey. “I became a representative at Dewey for the Hispanic community to help engage more Latino families to get involved at the school,” she says.

Ms. Martinez was invited to join the 2015 Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off event planning committee. She accepted the responsibilities of Entertainment Manager and secured outstanding talent for the celebration. She says, “It is a pleasure to give back to my community by sharing my culture.”
