The Three Violinists to Play
On Friday evenings at Oldershaw Hall in St. Nicholas Church, three violinists have been meeting regularly to prepare for a special performance that will celebrate Latino heritage. Jasmyne Montoya, a sixth-grader at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School; David Tabarez-Cisneros, a seventh-grader at Joseph Sears School in Kenilworth; and Michael Vega, a sophomore at Loyola Academy, will perform for the first time as a trio at the Latino Leadership Awards Benefit on Oct. 10 at the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.

Michael Vega, acting musical director for the group, said, “This has been a wonderful experience for me. We are all learning from each other as violinists.” The group has a combined total of 13 years of violin experience. Each member shared that playing the violin was a personal choice. David stated, “The violin is a complex instrument. I think I am smarter because I have learned how to play it.”

“We have all played classical violin songs at concerts, but this is the first time we will play Latino songs like “Cielito Lindo,” “Las Mañanitas,” and “Guadalajara” for an audience. I am very proud to be have this opportunity,” Jasmyne chimed in. The three violinists agreed that playing the violin is not easy and requires patience. They believe it has changed their lives. “Go for it and give it your best shot,” exclaimed Michael.
