A Salute toa Local Latina Veteran
Janira (Melendez) Clark the daughter of Mexican immigrants, learned a great deal about immigration issues living in San Benito, a small town near the Brownsville, Tex. – Matamoros, Mexico border. “There was a lot of tension between the locals and the border patrol due to fears people had of being deported,” she said

Seeking more than San Benito could offer, she graduated early from high school as a Texas Scholar and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. “I wanted to travel and earn a college degree. I had the opportunity to work alongside people of all backgrounds,” she said. Ms. Clark served five years in the United States Marine Corps as a small missile repair specialist with tours in Okinawa, Japan, and Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

After earning a bachelor of science degree, she moved to China and taught English as a Second Language. In 2012, Ms. Clark arrived in Evanston and became a volunteer at the Democratic Party of Evanston. She has served as the volunteer coordinator, treasurer, director of communications and most recently was elected the first Latina president of the board of directors. “I want to see Latinos represented at every level,” she said.

Ms. Clark is currently completing her master’s of sociology thesis at DePaul University. “I want to be a role model for my daughter and other Latinos. We can’t be afraid to seek the answers we need for the questions, we have. I was taught not to question, and that was detrimental.”
