Evanston Takes a Stand Against Racism

Hundreds of Evanstonians from senior citizens to kindergartners lined Ridge Avenue on April 27 for the annual Stand Against Racism, a nationwide event sponsored by the national YWCA.

Children and adults held up signs they had made, advocating peace and opposing racism, bullying and other social injustices. In Evanston, the Stand in Evanston took place later than in most other cities, to accommodate school schedules. One mother said she found power in the stand, even if the youngest children did not understand it fully, because, “in seven or eight years, when they are in middle school, they’ll look back and know that, in Evanston, every year they took a stand against racism.”                                                                         RoundTable photos
