Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority spent the spring months helping the community in several ways.

In April, the sorority’s Ivy Pearl Foundation, together with the Woman’s Club of Evanston, sponsored Dreams Delivered, a prom boutique providing formal attire, shoes, jewelry, hair-style ideas, makeup and even alterations on site – all at no cost.

Dozens of shoppers chose from about 1,000 dresses over the three days.  Evanstonians donate dresses and other items each year to make the event a success.

“I love it. All of it,” said an ETHS senior who plans to major in engineering at Marquette University in the fall. Leaving the Woman’s Club with a long red dress and all the accessories she needs for the prom, she said, “This relieves so much stress.”

“We do this because we don’t want any girl who desires to go to the prom to be without,” said co-coordinator Clarice Davidson. “So, we’re very interested in making sure we advance their dreams and that they end high school with all the confidence and excitement that should go into finishing one phase before starting the next.”

In May, members helped restore Foster Park as part of the sorority’s Playground Mobilization Day, a national effort to improve the conditions of playgrounds around the country, especially in urban areas. The City of Evanston provided the supplies, and the volunteers painted benches, laid new sod, mulched trees and spruced up the grounds.

The Ivy Pearl Foundation honored its 12 scholarship recipients on June 1 with an awards presentation at the Joseph E. Hill Center: Myria Scott, Olivia Lackey-Benson, Carrington York, Alexis Harris-Dyer, Spencer Nabors, Laurianne Pene, Adrianna Carter, Ryan Johnson, Lauren Davis, Miara Handler, Amarii Johnson, Sydney Bernadel. In total, the foundation awarded nearly $13,000 in scholarships.
