Youth & Opportunity United (Y.O.U.) held their 13th annual Diverse Communities United (DCU) celebration at Evanston Township High School. Diverse Communities United is a youth-led community event celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy and vision for a peaceful, just and equitable world. This year’s theme was “Because of Them, I Can,” referring to the  activists of the past that devoted their lives to social justice and paved the way for the youth of the present to have a voice in society.

Performances included original poetry readings, dance numbers, short scenes and interviews with local leaders and community members. All eleven of Y.O.U.’s after school programs participated.

The Library scheduled events from mid-morning til late afternoon, culminiating in Reverend Eddie P. Reeves delivering his interpretation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”

Young, Black and Lit, a local nonprofit that seeks to put books that center, reflect and affirm Black children into the hands of local youth, had a table at the event. The group was able to give away more than 90 books featuring Black main characters to children in attenda

Two days before, on Jan. 19, the community celebrated the legacy of Dr. King at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center.
