Pop-Up Zine @ Northwestern

Pop-Up Zine in Evanston will come to Northwestern University’s campus for one night only on May 23, 2019, in the McCormick Tribune Foundation Center. Tickets are on sale at bit.ly/POPUPZINENUTICKETS.

Pop-Up Zine is a DIY opportunity, launched by Pop-Up Magazine Productions, for fans of Pop-Up Magazine, the acclaimed nationally touring “live magazine,” where local storytellers create their own versions of the “live magazine” experience. Pop-Up Zine at Northwestern will feature multimedia, hyperlocal stories that span film, photography, music, radio and Q&A from a wide range of NU-based contributors.

“The Pop-Up Zine format allows for six stories in a variety of different forms, including a radio-style story, a Q&A, a documentary film, a photo essay and a print-style feature—plus live music from a local student band,” says Aine Dougherty, a senior in the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications and Pop-Up Zine at Northwestern’s editor-in chief. “We've really made the show our own and are so excited to bring these stories from our fellow students to life.”

After seeing a Pop-Up Magazine show in Chicago in Oct. 2018, five journalism students—including Dougherty—started talking about creating their own version of the live storytelling show on campus. Quickly, they reached out to Medill Associate Professor Patti Wolter, who had been independently discussing a campus variation with Pop-Up Magazine, to join the team as a faculty advisor.    “We are the only Pop-Up Zine that is made up of college students, and we are really honored they trusted us,” says Patti Wolter, the Pop-Up Zine faculty advisor and associate professor of magazine journalism at Medill. “Part of the Zine toolkit and experience is that students get to work with Pop-Up Magazine editors on their stories, so getting professional editing experiences while also having the freedom to invent and experiment with story forms has been incredibly valuable.”    Dougherty, Wolter and their 20-person team of unstoppable journalists, filmmakers and artists promise an hour of live storytelling that will make audience members laugh, cry and think. Don’t miss it, May 23!
