Evanston neighbors were among the millions who took part in National Night Out (NNO) across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide.

Community members were invited to attend celebration events throughout Evanston on Aug. 6, beginning at 5:30 p.m., to take a public stance against crime. Fortunately, the rain that was predicted did not materialize, allowing families to enjoy snacks and a Starlight Movie at Penny Park, Lake Street and Ashland Avenue, food trucks and games at Kamen Park, 908 Seward St., and a local DJ and water slide at Twiggs Park, Dodge Avenue and Simpson Street.

The balmy summer evening was an invitation to join the Howard Street Walk at the intersection of Howard Street and Custer Avenue to walk with members of the Chicago Police Department. The Evanston Fire Department made an appearance at Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave., where patrons enjoyed reading and games.

The Pizzapalooza at Y.O.U., 911 Church St., hosted by the Evanston Citizen Police Academy, and a showing of the movie “Secret Life of Pets,” was a rain or shine event. The Evanston Animal Shelter, 2310 Oakton St., extended their invitation to include dogs at their family-friendly gathering, which clinched the deal for some pet-lovers.

Evanston Police Commander Ryan Glew said that Evanston’s NNO activities were very well attended.

“I don’t think you could have asked for anything more for a National Night Out event,” said Commander Glew.
