This month, Red 7 Salon celebrates its 10th anniversary, its sixth in Evanston. The spacious hair salon at 816 Dempster St. is bright and hip, but the ambiance is secondary to what the owners call their "signature attribute" – emphasis on their customers. Life partners Jason Hall and David Kafer, co-owners of Red 7, describe their salon as the "‘Cheers’ of the salon world."

"We get to know our customers. We value our relationships with our clients. We talk with them, and we do a lot of listening. … You don’t always get that approachability in the upscale [salon] experience," said Mr. Hall.

Customers range from the kids who come with their parents to octogenarians, he said. Mr. Hall said he and Mr. Kafer chose the Dempster Street location because they thought their services would fit well in the area, but their clients come not just from different parts of Evanston but "from Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, even Texas. … It’s a pretty diverse clientele, which we like, and clients like that, too," he said.

The salon offers services of many kinds – haircuts and coloring, extensions, chemical services, makeup and facial waxing – but hair services are their specialty. Asked how their staff members would deal with clients whose demands differ from what the stylist thinks is best, Mr. Hall said, "We hope that people would be open to us as experts, but if they’re not – well, they’re the clients." Still he said, "The integrity of the hair and the integrity of the salon" are important. The style "is a reflection on us," he said.

Mr. Kafer has painted all the artwork that adorns the salon, all of which is in bright primary colors in either acrylic or water-color. "The red, yellow and blue are our signature colors," said Mr. Hall. The name Red 7 comes from the color they both love and a favorite number. "We didn’t want to name it after ourselves. We think the name is a representation of energy, number and color."

The anniversary celebrations, both here and at their River North location, have included free mimosas on Saturdays, specially baked fortune cookies and free lottery tickets. "We want people to relax here, feel comfortable and have fun," said Mr. Hall. He added, "We’re glad to be in Evanston."
