The free concert was the fourth presented by the Levy Senior Center Foundation under the aegis of the Jamming Jean Concert Series. Already this relatively new musical series is making a name for itself around town.

Breakfast with Sherialyn Byrdsong
It has been more than 20 years since Ricky Byrdsong was murdered by a white supremacist while walking in his neighborhood with two of his young children. In the days and weeks that followed, stunned neighbors came together in shared grief. The community was shaken by the senseless shooting of the former Northwestern basketball coach who “never met a stranger” and was voted ‘most likable’ in high school, according to his wife, Sherialyn Byrdsong.

The Reused Muse: Satire in Past Voices
Elizabeth Barrett Browning died 158 years ago this week, after composing some of the loveliest verse of the 19th century. Robert Browning, who fell for her poetry and then for her, judged her sonnets the greatest since Shakespeare’s and so swept her from a domineering father, married her and convinced her to publish. She was an early feminist, and were she alive today I doubt she would fall for our president as she did for Robert. I think she would instead dismiss Trump with a verse like the following.
