Boys Lacrosse Beats Deerfield on May 14
By Brian Cleary

The Evanston Township High School boys’ lacrosse team took on Deerfield on May 14 in hopes of finishing the home portion of the regular season schedule with a victory, which they did, as they beat the Warriors 15-6.

After play was delayed for over an hour due to heavy rain and thunderstorms at Lazier Field in Evanston, the Wildkits eventually took the field and promptly scored the game’s first three goals courtesy of Kofi Hopps with 7:46 remaining in the first quarter, Colin Farragher with 6:23 remaining, and Jacob Griffin at the 6:05 mark.

After extending the lead to 6-1, Jacob would tally his second goal of the game, scoring with 10:34 remaining in the second quarter. Jacob’s goal was followed by goals from Joey Fitzgerald and Jack Reynolds, making it a 9-1 contest.

But the Warriors did not go down quietly, as they went on a 3-2 run to make it an 11-4 contest with three minutes remaining in the half. But fortunately for the Kits, that would be the closest the visitors would get as the Kits scored the next three goals, capped off by another Joey goal with 9:25 remaining in the third to make it a 14-4 game. The Warriors scored the next two goals, but Kofi found the back of the net once again to make it 15-6 with 3:50 remaining in the third, the final goal of the contest as the game was stopped with 1:05 remaining in the third due to lightning in the area. The win was the Kits their ninth victory of the season.

“I thought we played really well despite all the distractions to start off [senior night and rain/thunder/lightning conditions],” said head coach Bob Fournie. “I really thought we would be in trouble with the rain delay and I thought our kids would be confused, but they came out and fought really hard and played really well.”

Regarding his team’s ability to establish a lead early in the game and hold onto it the rest of the game, Coach Fournie said, “That was the game plan regardless of the weather was to get up early and finish the game and play a strong four quarters.”

With the victory against Deerfield, the Kits improved to 9-7 overall. “I think we are doing ok,” said the Coach regarding how his team is performing so far this season. “We let a couple of games slip, but we are beating the teams we are supposed to beat, and we are peaking right now before the playoffs, so it is a really good time to get a big win [against Deerfield].”

When asked what his goals and expectations are for the postseason, coach Fournie said with a laugh, “Win. We have to take care of two games [in the Sectional] then we [would most likely] play No. 1 Loyola if we take care of everything and that is a big game. The Coach added, “My three midfielders need to play well, and my goalie needs to be standing on his head

Next up, the Kits were set to take on Vernon Hills on May 15 then Stevenson on May 16 to close out the regular season. Regarding those matchups, Coach Fournie said, “Those are good prideful programs. They come out and play hard. They are not quite where we are, so we should take care of business but that is why they play the games.”

The Kits will open postseason play as the No. 2 seed in the 10-team Maine South Sectional. The Kits are scheduled to play on May 21 and will take on the winner of the Mather-Latin game.
