Justin Wynn Celebrates 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

More than 200 third- through eighth-graders participated in the 15th annual Justin Wynn Leadership Academy 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament held March 10 at Evanston Township High School. A portion of the tournament proceeds will be donated to Connections for the Homeless, an organization that works to end homelessness in our community.

Twenty-two teams participated in the tournament for 3rd and 4th graders.  The first-place winners were Dillon Pompey (Walker), Dion Lane (King Arts), Evyn Bell (Dawes) and Lewal Mahkie (Kingsley).  Matt Gilroy (Lincoln), Tommy Gilroy (Lincoln), Will Mettee (Willard) and Vito Rocca (Baker) came in second place.

Twenty-four teams competed in the 5th and 6th grade tournament.  The first-place winners were Yaris Irby (Nichols), Ben Crabbe (Chute), Jace Meeks (Chute) and Muhammed Lawal (Chute). The second-place finishers were Henry Gallun (Baker), George Lewis (Haven), Theo Rocca (Baker) and Lucas Adams-Agresti (Baker).

Nine teams played in the 7th and 8th grade tournament. Taking first place were Eyan Simms, Jacob Hall, Johnson Adekunie, and Devin Fox (all Chute).  In second place was the team of Ian Bady (Chute), Nate Kwiecinski (St. Francis Xavier), Adrian Martinez-Jones (Ravenswood), and Hunter Duncan (Wilmette Jr. High).

The Justin Wynn Fund was established in 1987 in memory of Justin Michael Wynn, who died in an accident when he was nine years old. Family and friends founded The Justin Wynn Fund and later the Justin Wynn Leadership Academy with the mission “to celebrate and nurture youth leaders by helping them develop a deep sense of self and responsibility for improving their communities.”
