ETHS Girls LaCrosse Team Continues Strong Season
By Brian Cleary

After falling to Central Suburban League South Conference foe Glenbrook South 17-9 on April 18, the Evanston Township High School girls lacrosse team hoped to bounce back when they took on arch-rival New Trier on April 25 at ETHS’s Lazier Field. Unfortunately, the Wildkits were unable to do so as they fell to the Trevians 20-5.

The Trevians jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but then sophomore Josie Lambert got the Kits on the board with 10:35 remaining in the first half to make it a 6-1 contest. Then, sophomore Mary McClintock scored the first of her two goals with 6:56 left, making it an 8-2 contest. After the Trevians scored their ninth goal, freshman Maggie Farragher scored the Kits’ third goal to make it 9-3 with 1:54 remaining in the half.

The Trevians went on to score the next seven goals, leading 16-3, but freshman Lily Mason’s goal with 16:24 remaining in the game made it 16-4. The Kits’ fifth and final goal came courtesy of Mary with two minutes remaining to make it 19-5. The Trevians then added another goal in the final minute to make the final score 20-5.

“I think overall we played really well. I do not think the score reflected how well our girls played and fought to the end,” said Head Coach Sarah McKenna regarding her team’s performance. “Our defense did a great job of communicating and picking it up in the second half. Our goalie Natalie [Ward] had some amazing saves. We started coming up with the draw [in the second half] and our attackers scored when they got down there, so there are some great positives coming off of this.” The Coach continued, “But they are a great team, they are the No. 2 team in the State [so] the fight in [our] girls is great. They did not back down, they came ready to play so that was great to see.”

With the loss to New Trier, the Kits record fell to 9-2 overall. When asked how she felt how the season is going, Coach McKenna said, “Our season is going great. We are 9-2 after [the New Trier] game. We are having a great season so far. We are really excited with our season, our girls have come out strong, and they did a lot of work in the off-season. We have a really close team and they play well together.”

For the Kits to keep up their strong level of play, Coach McKenna says her team needs to simply maintain the status quo. The Coach said, “Just continue doing what we have been doing.  We have had some tough losses against Glenbrook South and New Trier. Those are our only losses, and [those teams] are in the top four in the State. We have been winning games we are supposed to [win], so we just have to keep doing what we are supposed to do.”

The Kits were set to visit Stevenson on April 29. Coach McKenna said, “We are excited about Stevenson. They are always a close game for us. Two years ago, we went to three overtimes and the year before that, we went to two [overtimes], so we are real excited for Stevenson. They are always a great competitor for us, so it should be a good game.”

After the Stevenson game, the Kits take on Maine South on May 1, followed by a matchup with Lane Tech on May 4 as part of Senior Day at Lazier Field in Evanston.
