Several members of YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s Flying Fish Swim Team recently competed at summer championship meets and delivered impressive swims.

At the Illinois Swimming Long Course Senior Championships, held July 11-14 in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Clio Hancock, Aidan Dillon and Matt Gibson swam to top-10 finishes. Clio took fourth place in the women’s 400-meter individual medley with a time of 5:05.22. Dillon took sixth in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 16:49.39. And Matt touched second in the men’s 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:05.40.

At Speedo Sectionals in Minneapolis one week later, 15-year-old  Matt led the way with a second-place finish in the men’s 200-meter butterfly. His time of 2:03.71 qualified him for the 2019 Speedo Junior National Championships, which will be held in August at Stanford University in Cal. Matt also finished ninth in the men’s 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:07.30.

Also at Sectionals, Aidan took 10th in the men’s 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:38.76, and he teamed up with Aaron Martin, Evan Ziolkowski and Tommy Hackley to take sixth in the men’s 800-meter freestyle relay, which clocked in at 8:00.87.

At the Illinois Swimming Long Course Summer Age Group Championships, held July 25-28 in St. John, Ind., Nate Cvetas took eighth place in the 11-12 boys 50-meter butterfly with a time of 31.30, and ninth in the 11-12 boys 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:11.90. He also joined teammates Tommy Gardy, Will Huston and Cadel Saszik for a 10th-place finish in the 11-12 boys 400-meter freestyle relay, with a time of 4:33.64.

At the same meet, Milo Balzer placed ninth in the 13-14 boys 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:19.10, and tenth in the 13-14 boys 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:02.95.

With nearly 500 swimmers on the Flying Fish Swim Team and 1,000 annually in the Flying Fish Swim School, Flying Fish Aquatics at YWCA Evanston/North Shore is one of the largest aquatics programs in Illinois. The team is currently holding tryouts for the upcoming season. Learn more at ywca-ens.org/flyingfish.
