The Wildkits won their second game of the season on Aug. 28, with a 28-26, 25-23 victory over Jones Prep of Chicago in their season opener at Beardsley Gymnasium.
The Kits thrilled the home crowd with a come-from-behind effort in the second set and showed the mental toughness that Coach Liz Brieva has been seeking since she moved up from assistant coach to head coach last season.
Junior Kate Van Ert’s 7 kills and 4 assists combined with senior Rileigh Farragher’s 5 kills and 9 assists to lead the Wildkits, who have many new faces on the team.
Something else that is new is the true grit the Wildkits displayed down the stretch of both sets, matching a scrappy Jones team almost play-for-play on defense and refusing to get discouraged during stretches in which the visitors handled almost everything the ETHS offense threw at them.
The Kits won their next three games against Wheeling, Vernon Hills and Warren in the opening night of the Crosstown Volleyball Classic at Libertyville High School on Aug. 30, but their winning streak was broken with losses to Libertyville and Stevenson on Aug. 31. The Kits finished fourth in the tournament.
“We just kept losing our focus as we went along today,” Coach Brieva said on Aug. 31.“We weren’t together as a team. It seemed like we lost our faith. It’s so frustrating because we didn’t show our best today.
