Room for a View: Please Don't
By Peggy Tarr

I have talked for several months with a senior (man) who lives in a senior facility in Evanston. He was/is concerned and angry about the facility staff going into senior residents’ rooms and snooping into their belongings when the seniors are out. Of course, this invasion of privacy is frightening, offensive and probably illegal.

Conversation with this senior reminded me of a confession a friend (landlady) gave me years ago. If I have written about it before, I apologize. I am getting (?) old and do not remember everything I have written.

Anyway, my friend told me that she had rented a room to a young woman. One day, who knows why, my friend decided to check out her renter’s room when the woman was out. While snooping around, my friend spied a letter her renter was writing. She picked up the letter and began to read it.

Hey, Girl, You won’t believe this old goat I am renting this room from. She’s fat, ugly and stupid. I can’t wait to find a better place. She told me I had cooking privileges, but she stands over me when I cook, tells me what I cannot cook or how to cook my food. She stinks, too.”

My friend’s voice got angrier and angrier as she recited what was in the letter. “I made her move,” my friend added.

I looked at my friend and asked, “What were you doing reading her letter?” My friend’s face saddened and her eyes dropped to the floor.

“I know I shouldn’t have done that,” she said. I responded with, “As long as you know you were wrong and won’t do it again, give me a hug.”

We remained friends. If she did it again, she certainly did not tell me about it.

There is no excuse for landlords/landladies to enter renters’ rooms/apartments without permission and/or proper (legal) notification or an emergency.

Please don’t infringe on people’s privacy.
