More Room: If You Love Movies, Take the Challenge!
A month ago I was “tagged” by retired Columbia College film professor Judd Chesler, an Evanston resident, to take “The Facebook Movie Challenge.” The “rules” are simple: just post an image from each of your 10 favorite movies on successive days. No title, no commentary—just a photo.

Room for a View: Brethren

I was talking with a friend about the massacre of Jews in the Pittsburgh synagogue when I was suddenly overwhelmed by grief and could not talk. My friend tried to comfort me.

“HaMakom yenachem et’chem b’toch shar avay’lay Tzion vee’Yerushalayim.”

Room for a View: Remembering
I miss him terribly, still, at least as much as I miss my twin brother. Tom’s dying was not kind – either to him or to me and all who loved him. Yet, I am grateful for my memories – and knowing just how healing, over time, love can be.

Editorial: Facing the Scorching, Stormy, Frigid, Parched Future: Climate Change
Last week’s report on climate change seems to have something to frighten nearly everyone.  Storms will intensify but periods between them could be hotter and drier. More Room: My Faust Problem
I am obsessed with knowledge. I want to know everything. Well, not everything, of course, that is impossible, but the big things: quantum physics and plate tectonics and macroeconomics and…all the stuff I did not get around to studying in school because I was too lazy or preoccupied with other, more important stuff, like getting a date.

Room for a View: A Diversion
I just happened to step out onto the front yard of a friend’s house when a woman was walking with her dog down the road.

Room for a View: The Saints Among Us
Am I a saint?  “Who, me ?” Simple response, “of course not!” First of all, doesn’t a person have to die first to become one? And then there are the miracles. No way! Aren’t saints the inhabitants of heaven who seem to be, at least by their images, a humorless lot with praying hands and upturned eyes. Wearing bright halos? Clearly not me.

Editorial: A Few Grains of Thanks
This has been a banner year for pessimists. Glasses all over the country are half full. Some would say a bleak outlook is a reasonable one.

RoundTable Editorial View on the Proposed Road Across Hole No. 10 of Canal Shores Golf Course
One has to wonder what interest the County of Cook has in building a public road, at the taxpayers’ expense, across a community golf course to help out a developer.
