Tell Your Alderman to 'Say No To Pro At NU'
Budget gaps shouldn’t be closed on the backs of residents who pay taxes on $330 million value of private homes within five blocks of the district, year after year.  Northwestern is a not-for-profit institution and enjoys tax-free status on its more than 240 acres of property.  Northwestern is one of the top-ten wealthiest universities in the nation, with a $12 billion endowment and athletic department revenue of $93 million per year.

The City Should Uphold Its Zoning Standards
Northwestern University has requested an amendment to Evanston’s zoning code to allow professional sports events and for-profit entertainment events on its athletic campus on Central Street. The Evanston City Council should deny this request.

More Room: Hidden Treasure
Steve Winwood is having a moment. His Grammy-winning “Higher Love,” a No. 1 hit in 1986, has gone to No. 1 again, this time in a recording by Whitney Houston from 1990 and recently rereleased. Another version, performed by the Ndlovu Youth Choir, was awarded Judge’s Choice on America’s Got Talent last month and has almost 3 million views on YouTube.

Room for a View: Wisdom
I have heard that as people grow in age they grow in wisdom. “Yes, that fits. There is so much I know now that I didn’t know 10 or 20 years ago. Wisdom seems to fit.” It’s comforting and affirming feeling. But I wonder, “What do I do with what I’ve learned?”

Room for a View: Water Allergies

My sister and I were chatting on the phone when the subject of people not washing their hands came up.

My sister said, “Yeah. Water allergies.”

Editorial: Parking Problems
The City needs to take a comprehensive look at its multifaceted parking problem. A close look at what passes for reasonable parking in Evanston reveals little more than a hodge-podge of regulations with little in common but being clumped together in the City Code.

The Legislature Should Approve the Clean Energy Jobs Act
The Clean Energy Jobs Act (CEJA) is waiting in Springfield to be passed into law. Advocates in the environmental, environmental justice, health-care, consumer, faith and jobs sectors are among those pushing hard for its passage this fall during the General Assembly’s veto session.

Room for a View: Where Anger Belongs
Moral: Anger can go anywhere but to be resolved it needs to be taken where it belongs, back to its source, to whoever triggered it.

Room for a View: United by Clouds
As I crossed the street with the “walk” sign, I occasionally looked up at the sky at the wonderful clouds. When I reached the other side of the street, a woman, whom I did not know, arrived at the same part of the sidewalk as I. We exchanged smiles and hellos, commented on what a beautiful day it was, then stood and chatted about the fantastic clouds.

More Room: Cubs as Metaphor
For the first time since 2014, the Cubs are missing the National League playoffs. In the end it wasn’t even close. They finished the season nine games behind the Nationals and the Brewers for the two Wild Card playoff spots.

Placing the Vaping Crisis in Context: Time to Rethink Our Relationship With Tobacco
Maybe, instead of merely limiting access to gummy bear- and cotton-candy-flavored vaping products, we might seriously consider doing here what Beverly Hills did in June by voting to end all tobacco sales from the health conscious community by Jan. 2, 2021. Other California cities are deliberating an end to tobacco sales, without criminalizing possession or use of tobacco.

Climate Strike Speech: Stirring Words About Local and Global Impact
It’s been my great privilege to work, along with another ETHS parent and environmental activist, Becky Brodsky, to support a phenomenal group of young leaders in making this event happen. Please raise your hand if you are part of that team! I am deeply impressed with these students, and so inspired by them.
