Editorial: We Urge City Council to Preserve Social Services, and Explain Cost Increases on Crown Center
We urge the City to maintain funding of the Mental Health Board and other social services. At the same time, the City and City Council owe the community an explanation of how the cost of the Crown Center mushroomed to $53 million.

Room for a View: Joy
When I boarded the bus in Evanston, the bus appeared to be full.  After paying my fare, the only empty seat I saw was next to a  young man on the elevated seat behind the driver. While scanning the bus for a seat, I realized that the riders were mentally disabled. I assumed the group was on a field trip.

Room for a View: Breakthrough
Stuck. The session had barely started when I knew it would be “same old, same old” – surface, circular talk going nowhere. The parents and two teen daughters, both adopted, hunkered down in their predictable places – parents on opposite ends of the sofa, daughters in pulled away chairs – all looking at me, wanting different things.

Editorial: Maintain Dignity of People of All Races and Culture
They put it all on the line, our Founding Fathers, when they signed the Declaration of Independence on July 2, 1776. Signing the Declaration was not a pro forma exercise. The 56 people who signed agreed “for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

Room for a View: Getting Personal
On this 4th of July at my age I see myself more of a spectator of life rather than an active participant. Please do not get me wrong. I simply feel these days that our country and what’s next belong more to those coming after me than to myself. I have had my chance to give my best efforts to make my little piece of time meaningful. I am not finished yet but I feel my voice and my touch are, if not tentative, softer and lighter than in my younger years. Thus, “spectator” seems to fit, mostly, but what I am seeing is unsettling.

Room for a View: A Communal Bus Ride
I was on my favorite bus ride to downtown Chicago on the Saturday before the Gay Pride parade. Two young men got on. One of them asked the bus driver how to pay their fares while holding up a twenty-dollar bill. I shouted, “No, no. Do not use the twenty-dollar bill. You will not get change.”
